'Tre stelle nel buio. Il giorno della memoria raccontato in una scuola’.
Manni publisher
It is a January morning when Pupa Garribba enters a school to tell her story to the pupils: the war and the bombings, the escape by crossing the Alps on foot to seek refuge in Switzerland from the anti-Jewish racial laws and Nazi-Fascist persecution. And then the return to a destroyed Italy with a future to build.
In that classroom, there is also Lia, daughter of Shoah survivors; there is Professor Giulia, a lover of our Constitution; caretaker Ugo, grandson of a partisan; and then there are Maddi, Franki, Renata, Federico, Ahmed and the other students, each with their own convictions and their own stories, including those of foreigners who are victims of prejudice. Young people who ask questions, reflect, get angry, get moved, clash; and, progressively, become aware.
A novel for children in which the children themselves are the protagonists, because their listening is never passive, and what happened so long ago crosses over into the present.
At the end of the book there is the Time Line, a chronological thread that starts with the advent of fascism in Italy and unravels up to the present day, explaining the current value of Remembrance Day.
